The second term is well underway and on behalf of Dan Auchenberg and myself, we would like to give you a brief update on our progress as a group and identify what we’d like to accomplish before Spring Break. On the ice we are continuing with our theme of cooperate/compete where students are learning important individual tactics such as supporting the puck, reading the play, taking away/creating time and space, and competing for/ defending the puck. As a progression to these tactics we will be moving into our angling theme this month. In addition, individual, technical skills such as skating, puck handling, and passing and receiving are always included in all of our ice sessions.
We will also be completing the second half of our power skating instruction with Quantum Speed’s Lead Instructor, Vanessa Hettinger, where we will continue developing our stride, deep knee bend and edge work. She will be introducing different kinds of turns and pivots used to be effective in transition situations.
Students are continuing their weekly off-ice training with our fitness instructor, Ms. Osgood, where elements such as strength, flexibility, balance, power and endurance are incorporated into circuits and games. There will also be weekly treadmill sessions for purpose of developing skating technique, strength and endurance. We will be having our second round of off-ice fitness testing on Monday, February 8th which will incorporate agility, aerobic/anaerobic conditioning, power, flexibility and core strength.
Finally, in physical education, students have started their wall-climbing theme which will continue into February. Swimming and gymnastics will also be introduced this term with trips to Bonnie Doon Pool and Phoenix Gymnastics Club.
Once again, if you’d like to discuss your child’s development or progress in The Hockey Program, please don’t hesitate to contact Dan or myself. We are looking forward to seeing continued improvements in your student-athletes into the 2nd term!
Sincerely,
Lara Ruppell
