ANOTHER THP ALUM SIGNED BY NHL CLUB

Sena Acolatse, a Hockey Program alumnus, has been signed by the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League.
Acolatse, currently playing defence for the Prince George Cougars of the WHL, has had a breakout season this year, tallying 14 goals and 44 assists for 58 points in 61 GP for the Cougars this year. On top of this, the young defenceman has 128 penalty minutes, a fact that was not unnoticed by the Sharks as they look to toughen up their backend.
Sena was born in the Bay Area before he moved to Edmonton and started his career at The Hockey Program. Growing up, the Sharks were the team that inspired him to take up the game. When he plays his first game for the Sharks, he will become the first Bay Area born player to ever play with the organization.
On how the Hockey Program helped Sena achieve this goal, Sena said..
"It was great being able to get all that extra ice time and to have the good instructors to guide us along with skill development, mental exercises, and to push us in school. Another highlight for me is all the connections I made with the instructors and the other hockey guys. My best and lasting friendships are from that period of my life."
Sena's mother Dena had this to say about the program:
"I love The Hockey Program at Vimy Ridge Academy and the people who run it. Sena was in the program for six years. When he went to the WHL at age 15, Vimy became his home base high school and is where he earned his diploma. It was the perfect place for Sena–he focused on academics part of the school day and spent the rest of the day benefiting from valuable ice time and training. The people who run the program make the difference – I can't say enough about their integrity, passion for hockey, and commitment to the kids."

AAD TO ADD RINGETTE PROGRAM
Since 1996, Academic Athletic Development and Donnan School have worked in concert to provide some of Canada's most unique sports alternative programming. Sport Academies were identified in 1999 as venues for increasing student participation in sport, health and wellness. Donnan School and the Academic and Athletic Development Association were already providing these advantages to youth. We currently have over 600 students involved in our academic and athletic programs, including Hockey, Lacrosse, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Sports Recreation.
Ringette specific programming would build on sports recreation, allowing the students to acquire physical literacy skills through multiple sports, and adding the benefits of 2 ice times a week to work on ringette specific skills, as well as a skating treadmill on site. This is an opportunity to train in a non-competition based environment with the goal of increasing skill and understanding. The on-ice programming is complemented with off-ice focus on nutrition, fitness, and overall health to foster complete growth in the athletes.
The program will accept 18 to 22 students from grades 3 to 6 attending Donnan on a full-time basis. The 2011–2012 school year is the first in a three-year plan to develop the ringette specific program.
Bronwen Harvey will be in charge of the Ringette program and brings many years of expertise playing and coaching at various levels. Playing highlights include 18 years in Edmonton and Vancouver combined at the AA and A level, two appearances at Nationals, being a member of tournament teams for the World Championship Host in 2002, and a team that participated in a tournament in the Czech Republic in 2002.
Ringette is a passion she hopes to share through the program at Donnan.

THP LENDS A HELPING HAND

This year, in order to fulfill the volunteer component of the Health curriculum, The Jiu-Jitsu Program along with Sport Rec, The Hockey Program and Regular Program Students at Donnan school participated in the Backpacks for the Homeless initiative. This cause has been organized by the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services and will help provide homeless people with some of the essential items that they may require to cope with the winter months.
Students worked individually or in small groups to complete this project and had the opportunity to deliver the Backpacks to Fire Station 6 on December 1st.
"This was an excellent opportunity for our students to do some extra work around the house and possibly earn some money to purchase an item for the backpack or for them to evaluate their own items and see if they have anything of their own (toque, gloves, scarf etc.) they would be willing to donate to this project. The entire school really bought into the idea of helping out other people, strangers, which have fallen on hard times. I, as well as, the rest of the Donnan teaching staff am very proud of the students and look forward to the next opportunity to become involved; helping our community." - Professor Malin (BJJ Program)
THP STUDENT ATHLETE WINS FOOTBALL PROVINCIALS

Liam Belcourt, Hockey Program Student Athlete at Donnan School, is a member of the Atom tier one Warriors Football team out of Sherwood Park who recently won the provincial championship over rival Edmonton Chargers. This is Sherwood Park's first provincial title at this level since 2004.
On November 6th, Liam, who plays Middle Linebacker on Defence and Slotback on Offence, used his size and aggressiveness to lead his 6-1 team in tackles en route to a 30-12 defeat over the 7-0 Chargers who had beaten them earlier in the year.
Liam's achievement is a testament to his physical literacy and general athleticism, and an example of how hard work within one sport can benefit performance in another.

THP ALUMNI SCORES FIRST NCAA GOAL AT 17 YEARS OLD

The 17 year old Freshman came to the UND program after being pursued by many other elite NCAA Division 1 schools. Perhaps a contributing factor for all the attention the 6’2 205 Simpson was receiving was an article at the Inside College Hockey.com naming him as one of the "Nine Newsmakers of 2010".
Prior to committing to UND, Dillon was a standout defenceman for the Spruce Grove Saints of the AJHL, a team he helped win the Enerflex Cup Championship in 2010, while being named AJHL Rookie of the Year and a unanimous selection to the AJHL North Division All-Rookie Team.

The Hitmen play the Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday in Airdrie and Saturday in Innisfail in games that should feature the young forward.

VIMY RIDGE JR. VARSITY OUTGUNS ST. THOMAS MORE
The line of Jayden Descheneau, Tristan Reimer and John Quenneville led the way as the Vimy Ridge Junior Varsity bested St. Thomas More 9-2 in exhibition action at River Cree Arena on June 7.
The score was deceiving as STM battled hard in the first period only to be absolutely stoned by Zach Antoniw, Vimy's starting goalie. Zach ended up shutting out STM in his half of the game with Garrett Storms finishing strong and only giving up unstoppable power play goals.
Tristan Reimer netted 3 goals and Giorgio Estephan potted 2 markers. Other goal scorers for Vimy were John Quenneville, Jayden Descheneau, Ryan D'Amore and Riley Sheen.
THP INSTRUCTORS NAMED AJHL HEAD COACHES
THP instructors Jason Mckee (Spruce Grove Saints) and Tim Fragle (Sherwood Park Crusaders) have been named the Head Coaches of their respective AJHL teams.
Jason Mckee was named Head Coach and GM of the Spruce Grove Saints early in May, filling the void left by former Head Coach and GM and THP instructor Steve Hamilton. Jason was previously on the Saints staff in an Assistant Coaching role. Jason has been with the team for four years and helped the Saints capture the Enerflex Cup for the AJHL Championship in 2010. During his tenure with the Saints, the team has amassed a record of 164 wins, 47 losses, 6 ties and 27 OTL.
On May 26th it was announced that Tim Fragle was to become the new Head Coach of the Sherwood Park Crusaders , a team that he once captained. Tim, affectionately known as "Frags" by colleagues and players, was the team's assistant coach for the 2009-2010 season. VIMY RIDGE NAMED AS POSSIBLE TWIN ARENA SITE

Vimy Ridge Academy has been named by Edmonton City Council as a possible site for a twin arena and fieldhouse.
While it is still early in the process, the proposed arena would have a 500 seat arena on one side as well as a 250 seat arena on the other.
The field house would have seating for 100, as well as a fitness centre, commercial space and dressing rooms.
The site for the arena would be just west of the school where the school's track field is currently located. The track field and soccer facilities would be moved to the south where the metro continuing education school is at this time.

THP STUDENT HAS STRONG SHOWING AT WHL TRAINING CAMP

Courtesy of Gregg Drinnan of the Kamloops Daily News:
"Sixteen months ago, Colin Smith was the future.
Today, the future is just about here.
"I've been pretty anxious to get it all started," said Smith, who has had a terrific start to the Kamloops Blazers' training camp. "Now it's unfolding and it's a very exciting time."
Smith, 16, was the Blazers' first selection, seventh overall, in the WHL's 2008 bantam draft. A scoring phenom in Edmonton minor hockey, he put up 55 points, including 23 goals, in 34 regular-season games with the midget AAA CAC Canadians last season. He added seven points in five playoff games and also had seven points in four games at the Mac's tournament in Calgary. Smith also got into 12 games with the Blazers, picking up four assists in eight regular-season games and a goal in four playoff games.
"Probably the speed," he said Sunday, when asked about the biggest adjustment he had to make when he reached the WHL. "You always have to move your feet. Plays develop a lot quicker and you have to adapt to that. You have to simplify your game to make things happen. You have to get rid of (the puck) quicker . . ." That shouldn't be a problem for Smith, whose feet are as quick as those belonging to an NBA point guard. He has shown his quickness early in camp, too, especially Saturday when he scored four times in two scrimmages.
"The first game (on Friday) was OK," Smith said. "I think I picked it up from there. It's definitely going to get a lot more tense with the older guys, so it's going to be fun." The Blazers cut their camp roster from 94 to 60 prior to Sunday's workouts so, yes, things are starting to get tense, especially among the 19 veterans who realize that jobs are on the line. And Smith was doing what he does best in a scrimmage last night, making an especially nice play and pass that paid off in a goal by Dylan Willick, a prospect out of Prince George. Smith said he went into this camp carrying only the pressure he has put on himself. "That was two years ago," he said of being a first-round draft pick. "A lot has happened since then. The draft doesn't matter any more. I expect myself to do well and I want to do well, so that adds a little pressure to it."
Like most players in WHL training camps, Smith said he spent the summer "working out." He also attended a couple of Team Pacific camps and has been shortlisted for the team that will compete at the U-17 World Hockey Challenge in Timmins, Ont., Dec. 28 to Jan. 4. Smith is a bit bigger now than he was last season and said he feels stronger. He was 5-foot-9 and 145 pounds in the spring and now is 5-foot-10 and 157 pounds. "It's hard for my body type to put on weight," said Smith, who is anything but rawboned. "But I feel a lot stronger than I did coming in last season."
The Blazers also are looking for some offence from Smith, who said he just wants to contribute. "I just want to get better on a daily basis and try to do the best that I can to help the team," he said. "That would be great if I can contribute and fulfil my role, whatever that is." While it's early, Smith, who is going into Grade 11, may find himself on the same line as veteran Tyler Shattock, with the Blazers hoping that will enlarge the freshman's comfort zone at least a bit.
JUST NOTES: Smith is a product of Vimy Ridge Academy in Edmonton, where he has been under the tutelage of Rick Carriere, a teacher there who is a highly respected former WHL general manager and head coach. . . . D Brady Gaudet, the Blazers' first pick, 10th overall, in the 2009 bantam draft, suffered what GM Craig Bonner called "a minor knee injury" in a Friday night scrimmage. Gaudet isn't expected to play in Tuesday's Blue/White game. It's hoped he will play one of two weekend exhibition games. . . . The Blazers meet the Vancouver Giants in Ladner on Friday with a rematch here Saturday. . . . D Darryl Sydor, one of the Blazers' five owners, returned to Dallas with his family on Saturday to begin preparations for another school year. Sydor, an NHL free agent, finished last season with the Dallas Stars, who acquired the 37-year-old from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sydor, who made US$2.5 million last season, hopes to play at least one more season and is awaiting an offer. . . . Mark Recchi, another of the owners, has returned to his home in Pittsburgh. He was keeping tabs on camp Sunday evening through Bonner's BlackBerry."

SKATE SHARPENING OFFERED AT THP
The Hockey Program is again proud to offer its student athletes the opportunity to have their skates sharpened every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Skate sharpening cards can be purchased for thirty dollars, which gets you 10 sharpens, or can be purchased individually for three dollars. Vimy ridge students need to drop off their skates either at the loading dock or the hockey office before 10am and Donnan Students should talk to Mr.Beissel about their skate sharpening. It is very important that students mark their skates (usually on the blade holder) clearly so that we can keep track of them.If skates are not marked clearly, they will not be accepted.
